Greta Hall, Sustainability & the Environment

At Greta Hall we are privileged to live surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the world
- together we can keep it that way -
We live in times of limited resources but unlimited desire to consume them.
The answer though is simple: we will have to take more responsibility for our consumption. Consume less
As holiday makers and accommodation providers we have to share the responsibility.
Jeronime & Scott have aimed to ‘live lightly’ with their children for the past 20 years. Now at Greta Hall, we seek to provide you with beautiful accommodation with minimal ecological footprint.
As evidence of our commitment we;
- Have written a detailed Environmental Sustainability & Social Policy
- Have established an Environmental Sustainability & Social Development Plan 2008-2010.
- Joined the Green Tourism Business Award and will be assessed in 2009.
(The scheme provides accreditation & encouragement for tourism businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their activities)
Currently we are focusing on the following steps to reduce our ecological footprint:
- Management & Marketing
Ensure that our Environmental Sustainability & Social Policy and Development Plan underpin every aspect of our business and daily family life.
All our marketing is on-line, all communication with guests is paper-less
- Social Involvement & Communication
Provide guests with the support they require to be sustainable visitors, ensure that our business decisions are considered in a social perspective and support a range of local & international charities. We invite guests to contribute £1 per guest per week towards our chosen Environmental & Social Responsibility Projects. Click here to learn more
- Energy Consumption
Continue to introduce a range of measures to reduce Greta Hall’s reliance on fossil fuels.
- Water
Develop on-going strategies to reduce water consumption and pollution
- Purchasing
Use our purchasing power as a tool to influence change and make a positive contribution to local/international society and the environment.
- Waste
Reduce overall consumption and operate a comprehensive recycling system.
- Natural & Cultural Heritage
Preserve the character of Greta Hall, a Grade 1* listed building and provide guests with a wide range of information regarding natural & cultural heritage in the Keswick area.
- Travel
Provide incentives and offer practical advice to guests who would like to enjoy a car free holiday & supporting the local community.
- Innovation
Reduce the carbon footprint of our personal vehicles - our next vehicle will be a hybrid!
Introduce new technologies to reduce
Greta Hall's carbon footprint (within the restrictions of a listed building) and make our family & guests less dependent on mas produced / retailed food.
Our practical and academic activities illustrate a high level of commitment for sustainability on waste and carbon reduction. We offer a discount to guests who would like to share in our commitment to leave a legacy of a sustainable future.
